10 Darn Good Reasons for Handbook

About the Author

About Jeanette Lewis, the author, and Why the Handbook

Compiling this handbook did not begin as a planned project but rather as a favor to a relative, my 16-year-old sister (a junior in high school). With some free time on my hands I happily volunteered to "look into" getting the necessary information needed to enter college. Sometimes I don't know when to keep my mouth shut!...

My first step was to call a couple of high schools for information on going to college.
"No, they did not have a handbook", "Yes, they did have some brochures and pamphlets available. What information did I need?", the office clerk asked. "Everything, I guess...?", I answered while thinking to myself "How in the world should I know!". Well, I was welcome to come down and look through the various pamphlets they had and take what I needed she told me. Since I had to make a trip to the high school I took one of everything they had and I stopped by the library for books. At home I made two piles of reference material to read and sort through! What did I get myself into? I thought.

Putting the literature aside, I jumped on the internet to whisk this task to completion!
I started with the most popular search result and got a page full of different links on topics from A to Z. Starting with the first link I was transferred to a page with seven links.
GOOD GRIEF! Selecting the first link on that page took me to a page with five other links to follow. Sigh, me and my big mouth... Rolling up my sleeves, I began processing the information that Christmas-treed into the various links. After all, a promise is a promise -- and I was determined to complete my volunteered offer. I began early in the evenings, usually by 6pm, and continued to midnight, sometimes 1am, working on my promise. As I plowed through the information I began to have some very strong feelings about the information I found...

Researching caused me to reflect back upon my life. I was an Honor Graduate of my high school class; actually I graduated 3 months early and was the "valedictorian" of that graduating group of students. I had a gold tassel and a gold scarf...I was responsible, dependable, and very mature for my age. Why didn't I go to college? Almost 20 years later I look back and see that even I, as a 17-year-old high school graduate, did not have the responsibility level to pursue a college education. I didn't know what was supposed to be done and quite frankly, I was glad to be done with school! The adults in my life at that time did not provide the guidance, leadership, and push that I needed to pursue a college education. No school counselor pulled me aside to tell me that my grades were extremely exceptional and cover all the areas I needed to know about going to college. I was the product of a single-income family. My mother has always been a housewife & mother and my father worked a fulltime bluecollar job to take care of all of us. Neither had been to college, didn't know the first thing about going to or preparing for college, and didn't have the money to send me to college. After fifteen years of working fulltime in the finance industry I managed to complete approximately 2 years of community college along with several short certificate courses and a one-year certificate course relative to my occupational field. I cannot help but wonder where I would be today if I had gone to college.

Well, I finally completed my research. I shared with others the things I never knew and found out they didn't know either! I decided then to condense it down and compile a handbook. Yes, I learned alot about preparing for college and I have alot to say about scholarships too! I've worked so long on both subjects that my husband is sick of the entire thing. My feelings became so strong about telling others that I created this website. If one parent learns from my handbook or is motivated enough by my site to begin preparing for their child's college future then it has been worth it. I know now to prepare well ahead for the college future of my son. He's only 2-years-old now, but the sales from this handbook will help provide for his college future. I know now that you can never start too early.

Wishing you and your children success, sincerely,
Jeanette M. Lewis, Global College Resource Service (my business name)
